Corten Steel: a living material between aesthetics and durability

Corten steel is a material that, more than others, expresses time as an integral part of the design. Used by Lamberti Design in both architectural and furnishing contexts, it stands out for its ability to evolve over time through a controlled oxidation process. Its characteristic surface patina, with tones ranging from orange to deep brown, is not only an aesthetic element but also a true natural protection that prevents internal corrosion, making the material particularly suitable for outdoor applications as well.

In the design process, Corten therefore becomes a conscious choice: a surface that changes, stabilizes, and gains depth, interacting with the surrounding environment. For indoor applications, the material is treated to make the surface more uniform and pleasant to the touch, while preserving its authentic and tactile character.

Technology and craftsmanship in Corten processing

Lamberti Design works with Corten through an approach that combines craftsmanship and technical research. Within the company’s chemical laboratory, accelerated oxidation processes are developed, significantly reducing the natural oxidation time of the material—from years to just a few months. This makes it possible to control the final result, achieving stable, uniform surfaces that are consistent with the design.

The various processes—from laser cutting to press bending, through to surface treatments—allow the metal to be shaped with precision while preserving its expressive strength. Each intervention is designed to enhance the material and ensure long-term durability, integrating aesthetics and performance.

The result is a material that retains its “living” nature, yet is guided through a controlled process capable of meeting the needs of architects and designers.

Some applications

For the Convento di Amalfi Anantara Grand Hotel, corten steel was used to produce a striking entrance portal. Additionally, the entrance walls were clad with corten sheets applied to a custom-made structural metal subframe. The result is a sober yet impactful architectural element that welcomes guests with elegance and expressive strength, while enhancing the authentic charm of the historic building.

In Cava de’ Tirreni, commemorative display totems were manufactured in memory of Franco Troiano, featuring corten plates cut and engraved with the dates and names of the most iconic concerts held in the city. After cutting, the plates were press-bent, welded, and pre-oxidized before installation.
